Nocera and Sandolo fire up for Masters with victory in Challenge Match |
 |
(Emirates GC, Dubai – 24th October 2006) – Gwladys
Nocera and Sophie Sandolo began their maiden desert safari in style by
winning the Dubai Ladies Masters Challenge Match at the par-3 course of
the Emirates Golf Club on Tuesday evening.
The pair
combined effectively to post a two-under-par 25 to edge world number
one Annika Sorenstam and Solheim Cup veteran Catrin Nilsmark who
finished on level par and the Australian duo of Karrie Webb and Anna
Rawson, who posted a combined total of one over par 28.

Followed by an appreciative crowd, the challenge match, sponsored by
Jumeirah Golf Estates, provided the very first opportunity for the fans
to witness the world's leading players in action.
The match also
marked the opening of the par-3 course. "We really had fun," enthused
Nocera who warmed up the bigger challenge ahead with an almost flawless
game.
"I am looking forward to a good weekend in Dubai," said
the French ace, the winner of three tournaments on the Ladies European
Tour this season. A victory in Dubai would put her on top of the Ladies
European Tour’s New Star Money List, ahead of England's Laura Davies.
The
new par-course at the Emirates Golf Club is designed in the style of
the Wadi by Faldo. The course draws upon the Wadi theme with desert
waste areas contrasting against elevated island greens and flashes of
white sand that emanate from the signature Faldo bunkers.
"The
six players have been selected for the challenge match on the basis of
their rankings and, of course, for their star value on the tour," said
Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice-chairman of golf in DUBAI, the promoters and
organisers of the event.
"Our thanks goes to Jumeirah Golf
Estates for their sponsorship of the Challenge Match, an opening
tournament which is always enjoyed by all."
‘golf in DUBAI’ is
backed by Dubal (Dubai Aluminium) as the main partner and National Bank
of Dubai, Emaar, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Emirates airline, BMW, Gulf
News and Omega as partners in its drive to showcase the emirate’s
vibrant golfing scene to a worldwide audience.
