Sandolo moves into second round lead in Catalonia By Bethan Cutler 23-09-2005
|
| | (El Golf Platja de Pals, Costa Brava, September 23, 2005) Sophie
Sandolo from Italy shot a low-round five-under-par 68 to move into the
lead at nine-under-par 137 after the second round of play at the
Catalonia Ladies Masters at El Golf Platja del Pals, on the Costa
Brava. |

| Sandolo has a one-shot advantage over the home favourite, Spaniard
Paula Marti, who carded a three-under-par 70 to total eight-under-par.
Karine Icher, the defending champion, had a 69 to share third
place with Denmarks Iben Tinning, who and a 70 and French woman
Gwladys Nocera, who shot a 71, all at seven under par. Sandolo, who resides in the principality of Monaco, birdied
holes one, three, four, six and eight on her front nine to make the
turn at four-under-par, with just one mistake at the par-5 fifth hole
where she three putted for bogey.
The 29-year-old dropped her second shot of the day at the 15th
hole to move to three under par for the day but then regained her
momentum with another birdie at the 16th hole. That moved her to
four-under-par for the day and eight-under-par for the tournament, one
shot behind Marti, the tournament leader, until the last hole.
|
The tables turned when Marti, playing in the same group as Sandolo,
three putted the 18th for bogey and Sandolo holed out from eight metres
for birdie. I played solid and didnt miss many greens today and the only
mistakes I made were on the par fives, said Sandolo following her
round. With one round left I just want to play the same way tomorrow.
Sandolo, whose player profile received more hits than any other on
the LET website after she released an explosive and sexy 2005
calendar, has recorded four top ten finishes on the LET this season.
This is the last tournament of the season so I just want to
enjoy it, said Sandolo. All the players here have a great chance,
both Paula and Gwladys played great today, so well see what happens
tomorrow. Sandolo, who is playing on her sixth season on Tour, studied
Marketing at UCLA. Her best finish this season was tied for third place
at the BMW Ladies Italian Open in June, and the experience, she said,
gave her the most satisfaction of her career, despite having finished
in second place at the Spanish Open in 2003.
Away from golf, Sandolo is a keen windsurfer and she would rate
her water sporting skills at about the equivalent of a 15 handicap in
golf. She also hopes to win the jet-ski on offer for a hole-in-one
tomorrow. |
